In 1972, a Bedford CF Ice Cream Van was born… She rolled off the Vauxhall production line with a smile on her face and frozen sugary goodness in her belly. Edward Heath was Prime Minister, Derby County won the First Division, Mastermind was first broadcast and a state of emergency was declared as a result of the miners’ strike. But as a baby Bedford learnt to drive and trundled along on the first few miles of her existence, little did she realise that thirty-two years later she’d enter a mid-life crisis, turn to alcohol and embark on a journey to begin a very different chapter of her life.
This is what our van looked like in her youth.
Last month, on a delightfully crisp late-summer Wednesday morning, the NC team travelled all the way to Norfolk to pick up the new addition to our family. Unfortunately, as we waved goodbye to the River Severn and voyaged deep into St George’s green and pleasant land, only ordeal lay ahead of us. But after a 21 hour (600 mile) round trip, a 45mph top-speed, 3 breakdowns, 2 McDonald’s, a Burger King and numerous drained iPhone batteries… She limped into Bridgend.
The Nolton Corner Mojito Van at Bridgend Feastival 2014
We took her straight to our top-secret work shop and started work on transforming her from an ugly ducking to a beautiful boozy swan! Then, in the nick of time, we secured a pitch and unveiled her at the fifth annual Bridgend Feastival on 26th September. Our focus at Feastival was mainly on mojitos, but we also offered award-winning Welsh ciders and ice cold Spanish lager. The weather was glorious and our van was the vainest vehicle in the county, checking herself out in every puddle, glass reflection and selfie she could focus her fog lights on.
Then on Sunday 28th we rolled up the road to take part in The Nolton Street Party 2: The Sequel… A tremendously fun filled day of music, food & drink. We were right next to the stage and able to enjoy music from one of our favourite Welsh bands – Written In Kings
So what’s next?
Well, now that we’ve got our first event out of the way – we’re back in the workshop tweaking a few teething issues. On top of that, we’ll be adding an awning and improving our signage, not to mention working on new cocktails. But we’re also toying with some ideas, including rigging up some speakers, bringing back our ice cream jingle… and (maybe) plumbing some beer taps in.
Anyway, once we’re done – next up, we plan to showcase the delights of mulled wines and ciders at local Christmas Markets & Fairs throughout December. Maybe you’ll see Santa giving Rudolph & co a rest and driving the NC Cocktail Van himself.
In 2015, we’ll be fully available for weddings, parties and events. Offering a fully licensed, bespoke bar service complete with cocktail staff and party planning.
